// With Yukon Crossing the last chance was gone, to end the whole thing in an easy way. At least I could paddle together with someone for 2 nights. This here is Paul with his Kayak.

Endlich wieder ein paar groessere Huegel. // Finally again some bigger hills.

// I gave Paul my camera, so that I have at least some pictures of me in my canoe.

// There were now more salmons, hangig on racks to dry out.

// A couple of rapids came then, but easy to paddle around. The water-level was so low, that a lot of the rocks were easy to see.

// Like I said, after 2 days Paul went on alone. He was so much faster than me. And he couldn't get used to paddling at night. We met two times after that, because we were paddling at different times. Thanks again, for delivering the letter to Whitehorse!

// The river was in the morning now warmer, than the air, so now and then there was fog on the water.

// And that there were more salmons in the river I could discover by the protein-balls, flowing on the river.

Fruehstueck im Kanu. // Breakfast in the canoe.

Immer mehr Eiweiss. // More and more protein.

Das Treibholz hatte manchmal ungewoehnliches zu bieten. // The driftwood sometimes had something unusual to offer.

// The very best way, to clean the dishes after a good meal is always sand. With sand I get even caked stuff clean. Also the Titanium Set of Trangia is a loyal companion since a long long time now.

// Fortunately the strong wind and higher waves were not so often.

// In the little town Ruby I resupplied some fresh food. So good, that I could always buy something fresh. And the people.....so friendly and helpful. Though, like everywhere, no one walks any more. When I think about it, I have to say, that the invention of the internal combustion engine has brought us more harm (in many ways), than it did us something good. Manchild is gettig fat and fatter. Like the air, that we all have to breathe.

// Now and then I had to filter some water from a creek. In Dawson City I organised three 4-Liter-Milkbottles and filled them always in the villages, where I resupplied, with potable water. So I saved some batteries and didn't use my Steri-Pen to often.

// The sometimes heavy wind is stirring up the sand.

Galena. // Galena. The next village. Close to it was Jimmy Island, where I made another zero-day. It was just amazing. Sun, sand, a warm river, enough to eat and to drind and silence (except of some skiffs and planes).

// Shortly after Galena there was the last Liquor-Store 'til the Bering-Sea. They extra made a sign at the riverbank. In all the towns down the river, alcohol is illegal. Like in the prohibition.

A lot of loud ravens were with me all the time. And I had to think always at a very special person....

// I arrived a bit to early in the next village, Nulato. The grocery store opened at noon and I arrived at 10 a.m.  So I just strolled a bit through town and then paddled on.

;-) // So, that's some BEARPOOP, isn't it? ;-)

// There were more and more Salmons, that sucessfully laid their eggs and sperm in the Yukon and then died. The river started smelling like salmon. For at least 4-5 days. And the dead salmons all around attracted the bears and the wolfes.

Sch... China-Gelump..... // Now and then I had to do smaller repairs. A piece of driftwood, some Gorilla-Tape and the handle is like new! Shitty chinese crap....

// And the owner of the fish-wheel came along the next morning for a little chat.

// The lower part of the Yukon-River is for the conditions pretty dense populated. The next village was Kaltag.

Oh oh.....grosser Petz und frische Spuren... // Oh oh....big bear and fresh tracks....

// And while I got just a blurred shot of this black bear.....

....wartete drei Ecken weiter...... // ....waiting three corners later......

.....dieses kleine Shetland-Pony hier. // ...this little Shetland-Pony here.

Little Coward" is easy to say, when there are 30 meters of moving water between me and the bear ;-)

// Shortly before the bear encounter there came a big military cargo-plane out of nothing. Pretty low.

// And maybe half an hour after the black bear I had my first (and only) Wolf on the tour. A beautiful young grey wolf. Pay attention to his gait. One time he is "sneaking", the next time he is "strutting" upright.

// And he also was feasting on the dead salmon.

// I could observe some Peregrine Falcons on the lower part of the river.

// Another funny story. One day, it was already late, I had done my 8-9 hours of paddling, I would float to an island on the other side of the river, when the wind picked up out of nothing and produced some higher waves. That happened 3-4 times on the trip. Anyway, I was busy, to come to the island, when I saw some figures moving there. From the distance I couldn't see, if it were bears or moose. At least 4 objects, that were moving there. What a crap, I wanted to pitch my tent there. But when I came closer, i saw, that it were children, dropped off by there parents for a nice day and picked up later.

Sehr nette Menschen! // Next day I came to Grayling. The village was transplanted 1962 from another place at the Innoko River. There it was flooded every year, so the people decided, to start over new at the Yukon. Very lovely people.

// It was a nice chat with the owner of the grocery store and her father (88 years old). Like me, she traveled a lot. And full of proud she showed me the book of Dirk Rohrbach about his adventures on the Yukon-River. He must have stopped here too, I have to look it up, when I can lay my hands on the book.

// Green peas-soup with naaasty blackflies. For about 4-5 days they were a pest. At the meals, but also at any other time. When I slipped in my tent, at least 30-40 of them made it in with me and I first had to kill them all, before I could think about sleep. And even then one or the other made it in and disturbed my sleep.

Und schon kam der naechste kleine Ort. Anvik. // And soon the next little village was there. Anvik. With a washeteria, which I used properly, to clean myself up.

//  On a pretty rainy day a fisherman came with his skiff, to check me out. He asked me, if I would help him, to check his nets. In comparison I could dry out at his place and he had plenty of food. And even a full bottle of vodka. He and his friend had a wet night and the friend was still completely drunk. Normally it would have been interesting, to go for salmon with a fisherman. But this guy was obvious still a bit drunk and so I just decided to paddle on.

Der naechste Ort fuer mich war Russian Mission, da ich Holy Cross irgendwie verpasst habe ;-) // The next town for me was Russian Mission, because somehow I missed Holy Cross ;-)

// This falcon here was yelling at me loudly. I could see why.

// I could make a video of a nest with three young birds before.

Vielen Dank nochmal, Jodi !!! // The weather was unpredictable now. Rainshowers and sun were changing. And one night I had a heavy storm with rain, that it opened up the rainfly of my tent. I couldn't close it anymore, so I improvised and worked with cloth-pins. Thank you again, Jodi !!!

Pilot Station.

// Sometimes the wind was so furious, that it blew the sand through the moskito-gaze in the tent.

St. Mary.

// The last town before Emmonak was Mountain Village.

// For the last stretch to Emmonak I decided, to paddle through the Tunurokpak Channel. It has less wind and waves there. And I had good weather, so it was a good decision. A bit longer maybe, but I had time.

// And when I can observe a violent attack of a falcon on an eagle?

Zuerst noch auf eine Sandbank gelaufen...// When I came finally out of the slough, fun was over. First I grounded the canoe one more time....

// ....and then wind and waves picked up that much, that I had to hustle to shore. And there I was stranded for a long time, because the high tide was coming in.

// I was glad, that I could make it to a little island many hours later, where I could pitch my tent. On wet ground, but I was glad, to sleep for a couple of hours and become dry again.

// The next day I grounded the canoe a couple of times, but against noon I made it to Emmonak.

// The river (or better, this arm of the Yukon) was a couple of kilometers wide.

Vielen Dank nochmal fuer all die Bemuehungen. Und das gute Essen in der Kantine! // After arriving there, I first went to the community building for the tide-table (nice people there), then to KwikPak and a secretary there booked my flight to Anchorage by phone and I could pay with Visa. Those people at KwikPak are just amazing !!! They just love to help the handful of paddlers, that arrive there every year. Thanks again for all the troubles. And the good food in the canteen.

// After that I bought some food and pitched my tent on a little island opposite town.

// I even asked some fishermen, if it's o.k. with my tent. They returned their nets. And they said, that it is all right.

// But we underestimated the incoming tide. And when I woke up early in the morning.....

// So I packed all my things into the canoe and started paddling. The last step to the Bering-Sea. It wasn't that bad like it looked. The bottom of my tent is pretty leakproof.

// It was a long ride. Against the current, with the incoming tide. A good 6 hours for the few kilometers back to Emmonak. But hei....I made it ! Whitehorse to the Bering-Sea.

// I was a couple of days in Emmonak. Sold my canoe and all the stuff, that I didn't need anymore. My flight should go on friday, but from thursday on it was a bad fog in St Marys, from where the planes should come. In the end, I made it out on Saturday. But even that was something. First they cancelled the flight on Saturday. But then, we werde just back at KwikPak, when the secretary yelled us, we should pack our shit, the plane landed in Emmonak. She turned the plane around in the air and a driver brought us immediately to the airport. So I made it in some steps to Anchorage late in the evening on Saturday.

// Sorry, when I make it a short one here, but I have to pack my stuff, the bus to Vancouver is leaving soon.

// I will work this end over, when I got some more time. Anyway....you have an impression of the Yukon-River now. I think you have. And should you become itchy fingers now.....just do it !
