Nach drei Tagen Dawson City bin ich weiter. Und war irgendwie befreit, dass ich wieder in Bewegung gekommen bin. Ich habe dort meinen Verpflegung aufgefrischt, gerade was frisches Obst und Gemuese betrifft. Und mich auf den Weg zur Grenze nach Alaska gemacht. // After 3 days in Dawson City I moved on. And I was released, that I could move again. I have refreshed my food there, especially the fresh fruits and veggies. And I made my way to Alaska.
Der Fluss legt nach Dawson City ein wenig an Geschwindigkeit zu. Ich musste schon gut im voraus schauen, wo ein guter Platz fuer eine Pause oder ein guter Zeltplatz ist, damit ich nicht daran vorbeigetrieben wurde. // The river picks up some speed behind Dawson City. I had to look carefully for a good place for a break or to pitch tent, so that I don't easily got floated by.

Allerdings ist waehrend meines Aufenthaltes in Dawson City der Wasserpegel im Fluss signifikant gestiegen. So musste ich am zweiten Tag mein Kanu und die Verpflegung etwas hoeher lagern. Und es kamen auch deutlich mehr Baeume den Fluss entlang. Es hiess also fuer mich, die Augen gut offen zu halten, damit mir nicht mal eines dieser Ungetueme ins Boot rauscht. // Though during my stay in Dawson City the water level of the river had risen significantly. So I had to store my canoe and my supply a bit higher on the second day. And there were way more trees comint down the river. For me it meant, to keep the eyes open, so that none of these monsters somes wooshing in my boat.
Und natuerlich war noch mehr Verkehr auf dem Fluss unterwegs. Diesmal eine Mutti MIT ihrem Kind.... // Naturally there was more traffic on the river. This time a mother WITH her child....
Kurz darauf bin ich an "Old Man Rock" und "Old Woman Rock" vorbeigepaddelt. Zwei Gesteinsformationen, die sich am rechten und linken Ufer des Flusses gegenueberstehen. // Shortly after that, I paddled between "Old Man Rock" and "Old Woman Rock". Two Rockformartions, that stands opposite on the right and left bank of the river.
Geraume Zeit vorher war ich schon an einer noch interessanteren Felsformation vorbeigekommen, die aber in meinem Fuehrer keinen Namen hatte. In meiner Fantasie steht dort ein stolzer Ureinwohner und wacht ueber den Fluss. // Some time before I came along an evon more interesting Formation, which hadn't any name in my guide. In my fantasy there stands a proud native, keeping watch over the river.
Am zweiten Tag nach Dawson City kam ich dann an die natuerliche Grenze zwischen dem Yukon-Territory in Kanada und Alaska/USA. Und bald darauf auch nach Eagle, dem ersten Dorf in Alaska am Yukon. Dort musste ich mich gleich telefonisch mit der Einwanderungsbehoerde in Verbindung setzen. Bis vor ein paar Jahren gab es dort noch einen Posten der Einwanderungsbehoerde. Aber nachdem nicht soooo viele Leute ueber den Fluss nach Alaska kommen, haengt dort jetzt ein Telefon und als ich den Hoerer abgenommen habe, war ich sofort mit einem Mitarbeiter irgendwo in den USA verbunden. Es hat etwas gedauert, bis er wusste, was ich von ihm will. Was bei den Jungs und Maedels der US-Einwanderung bemerkenswert ist: Sie geben dir immer den Eindruck, du waerest a) ein Schwerverbrecher, der irgend etwas boeses im Schilde fuehrt und b) sie behandeln dich gleichzeitig, als waerest du voellig debil. // The second day after Dawson City I made it to the natural border between the Yukon-Territory in Canada and Alaska/USA. And shortly after that to Eagle, the first village in Alaska at the Yukon-River. There I had to report immediately to customs via phone. Until some years ago there was still a customs-station there. But while not sooo many people are coming over the river to Alaska, there is just a phone hanging on a wall and when I lifted the receiver, I was immediately connected to an employee somewhere in the US. It took some time, before he understood, what I was telling him. What is impressing with the guys and girls from immigration: They always give you the impression that you are a) a serious criminal that is planning something evil and b) that you are some kind of an imbecile.

Einiges an Landschaft zu sehen. Und ich habe die Berge noch genossen, denn ab Circle kamen dann die "Flats", das Flachland mit seinen vielen Inseln und einem maeandernden Fluss. Und so war ich froh, dass ich noch wusste, wo es langgeht ;-) // A lot of landscape to see. And I enjoyed the mountains, because from Circle on came the "flats", the flat land with all it's islands and a river that is maeandering. So I was glad, that I still knew, where it was going ;-)
Irgendwo muss es etwas heftiger gebrannt haben, denn ab und zu kamen dicke Rauchschwaden daher. // Somewhere there must have been a bigger fire, because now and then some smoke came along.
Letzte Eisreste waren ab und zu noch am Ufer zu sehen. // The last remains of ice were sometimes visible on shore.
Die Berge liess ich hinter mir und kam Circle immer naeher. Die Gruender der kleinen Siedlung glaubten damals, sie waeren am Polarkreis angekommen. Der Ort liegt allerdings gute 80 Kilometer weiter suedlich. Kurz vor Circle kreisten auf einmal eine ganze Horde von Kampfflugzeugen ueber mir. Natuerlich etwas hoeher droben, aber doch tief genug, dass ich sie gut sehen konnte. Schon sehr merkwuerdig und nicht unbedingt zu erwarten hier oben, am A.... der Welt. // I left the mountains behind me and came closer to Circle. The founders of the small village thought then, they were at the arctic circle. But the village is a good 50 miles more south. Shortly before Circle a hord of fighting-jets were circling above me. For sure a bit higher, but so low, that I could see them properly. So strange and not necessarily to be expected up here, at the butt of the world.
Ich habe in Circle einen Ruhetag eingelegt. Direkt am Strand war reichlich Platz fuer mein Zelt und meine Ausruestung und die Menschen dort waren durch die Bank weg sehr freundlich und neugierig. Am Tag meiner Ankunft fand in der Gemeindehalle eine Bibelschule statt. Obwohl ich mit der Bibel nicht so arg viel am Hut habe, wurde ich dort freundlich begruesst und habe mich ganz gut mit den Leuten unterhalten. Was allerdings sehr nervtoetend war: fast rund um die Uhr war ein staendiges kommen und gehen am Strand. Und es geht NIEMAND mehr zu Fuss. Alles findet mit dem Auto, dem Quad oder selbstgebauten Vehikeln statt. Also in jedem Fall sehr laut !!! // I made a Zero-Day in Circle. Right at the beach was plenty of space for my tent and my gear and the people there were thorough friendly and curious. At the day of my arrival there was a bible school in the community hall. And even if I'm not to interested in the bible, I was warmly welcomed there and had a good chat with the people. What was really annoying: nearly around the clock there was a straight coming and going at the beach. And NOBODY walks there. It's all with cars, atv or self-constructed vehicles. In total very loud !!!
An beiden Abenden habe ich jeweils ein ordentliches Gewitter in der dortinge Washeteria "ausgesessen". Die Washeterias sind eine sehr gute Einrichtung. Neben Waschmaschinen und Trocknern gibt es dort auch Duschen und Toiletten. So bin ich auch mal wieder richtig sauber geworden und konnte mich rasieren etc. // On both evenings I sat out a huge thunderstorn in the washeteria there. These washeterias are a great invention. Next to washing machines and dryers they have showers and toilets. So I became clean again and could shave and so on.
Das erste Fish-Wheel, mit dem die Lachse aus dem Fluss geholt werden. // The first fish-wheel, with which they get the salmons out of the river.
Und als es dann weiterging, hat mich nach kurzer Zeit auch gleich ein guter Wind von vorne gepackt. Und nachdem ich nun die Flats erreicht hatte, wurde ich mit meinem Kanu dann auch sofort in einen Nebenarm gedrueckt, den ich dann geduldig gepaddelt bin. In der Gewissheit, dass ich frueher oder spaeter wieder auf den Hauptarm des Yukon gelangen wuerde. Dies ist das gute....ich wuerde nicht verloren gehen, es dauert nur halt ein wenig laenger. // And when I moved on, a good breeze from the front cought me after a while. And while I was in the flats now, I was pushed into a slough with my canoe, which I paddled patiently. In the certainty, that I would sooner or later the main channel of the Yukon again. That's the good thing.....I wouldn't get lost, it just takes a bit more time.
Da ich am Tag der Sommersonnenwende wieder los bin, habe ich dann am naechsten Tag beschlossen, einfach in der Nacht zu paddeln, da es dort wesentlich weniger Wind hat. Und ausserdem konnte ich einige richtig gute Bilder machen. // I started out from Circle at the Summer solstice and decided at the next day, that I would paddle during the nighttime, because there is much less wind then. And as well I could make some real good pictures.
Die Sonne ging nicht wirklich unter, sondern hat den Horizont nur kurz beruehrt, um dann gleich wieder aufzusteigen. Faszinierend. // The sun didn't disappear, just touched the horizon, to come up straight again. Fascinating.
Jodi hatte mir eine sehr gute Sonnencreme besorgt. Ohne Spiegel beim paddeln aber sehr schwierig zu verteilen ;-))) // Jodi organized me a very good sun screen. It's just hard to spread properly without a mirror while paddling ;-)))
Einige Male wurde ich von Moewen "attackiert", weil ich vermutlich etwas zu nah an ihren Nestern vorbeigepaddelt bin. Und bei einigen von denen musste ich mich wirklich wegducken. // A couple of times I was "attacked" by seagulls, because I might have paddled to close to their nests. And at some of these attacks I had to duck away.
Dann hat mir das Universum einen richtig tollen Augenblick geschickt. Einen schoenen Luchs, der direkt am Strand entlangwanderte. So einen Anblick gibt es nicht so oft im Leben. // Then the universe gave me a beautiful moment. A gorgeous Lynx, who was wandering the bank. Such a view one don't have often in his life.

Ueberhaupt waren die naechsten Tage voll mit Tierbegegnungen. // In General were the next days full of encounters with animals.
Der naechste kleine Ort war Fort Yukon. In meinem schlauen Buch stand, dass ich dort besser gut aufpasse auf mein Zeug, weil es der letzte Ort ist, an dem ich legal Alkohol kaufen kann. Und dementsprechend laufen dort wohl viele betrunkene rum und es ist wohl schon passiert, dass der ein oder andere von denen dann mal ein Kanu vom Ufer aus einfach in den Fluss schiebt. Und Diebstahl ist dort wohl auch kein Fremdwort. Ich war also sehr vorsichtig, habe mein Kanu etwas weiter flussabwaerts geparkt und war auch nur kurz einkaufen. Der Supermarkt war allerdings richtig gut. // The next little village was Fort Yukon. In my guidebook stood, that I better take care of my stuff there, because it's the last village to buy alcohol legally. And therefore a lot of drunks around there and it happened, that one or the other just shoved a beached canoe into the river. And also theft is not unusual there. So I was very careful, parked my canoe way downstream and just made a quick shopping. But the grocery store was really good.
Nachdem ich versucht habe, tagsueber zu schlafen, es aber richtig heiss war, habe ich meistens den Regenschutz beim Zelt weggelassen. Und trotzdem war es im Zelt immer noch unangenehm heiss. Ab und an bin ich einfach in den Fluss, habe mich etwas runtergekuehlt und dann weitergedoest. // While I was trying to sleep during the daytime, and it was so hot, I just pitched the inner tent. But it was still unpleasant hot in the tent. Now and then I just went into the river to cool down and then doze on.
Ich habe keine Ahnung, was fuer ein Tier dies hier genau war. Ich bin nicht nahe genug herangekommen. Es sieht nicht wie ein Luchs aus....aber ich denke, es war noch einer. // I got no clue, what kind of animal this here was. I couldn't came close enough. It don't look like a Lynx....but I think, it was one.
Viele kleine Fisch-Camps entlang des Flusses. Nur ein-zwei kleine Bretterbuden, von denen aus die Fischer dann die Lachse aus dem Fluss holen. // A lot of little fish-camps along the river. Just one-two little shacks, from which the fishermen get the salmon out of the river.
Es wurde wieder etwas huegeliger. Und ich wusste, das Yukon-Crossing nicht mehr weit war. Und damit das Ende der Yukon-Flats. Endlich wieder etwas einfacher zu navigieren. Yukon-Crossing ist kein Ort an sich. Eigentlich ist es "nur" eine grosse Raststaette mit Motel an der Stelle, wo zum einen der Highway den Fluss ueberquert, um sich dann bis ganz nach oben, nach Pruedhoe-Bay in Alaska zu winden. Also auch der letzte Strassenanschluss am Fluss. Und somit die letzte Moeglichkeit fuer die Paddler, die Angelegenheit hier zu beenden und mit dem Bus nach Fairbanks zu fahren. Zum anderen quert hier auch die Trans-Alaska-Pipeline den Fluss. Aber dafuer, dass es kein richtiger Ort ist, geht es hier ganz schoen zu. Die Fischer, die oberhalb und unterhalb Yukon-Crossing leben, haben hier ihre Pick-Ups deponiert, um damit nach Fairbanks zum einkaufen zu fahren. Gute 3 Stunden fahrt. Viele Touristen kommen hierher, um den Yukon-River zu sehen. Und natuerlich all die Abenteurer, die es bis nach ganz oben machen wollen. Es ist die letzte Tankstelle vor Pruedhoe Bay und jeder macht sich hier nochmal den Tank voll, denn es ist ein gutes Stueck bis nach oben. // It became a bit more hilly. And so I knew, that Yukon-Crossing couldn't be far. And with it the end of the Yukon-Flats. Finally a bit easier to navigate again. Yukon-Crossing is not a village. Actually it is "just" a huge pull-in with a motel on the spot, where the highway crosses the river, to wind up all the way to the top, to Pruedhoe-Bay in Alaska. Also it's the last connection to a road on the river. And the last opportunity for paddler, to end the whole thing here and take a bus to Fairbanks. Also the Trans-Alaska-Pipeline crosses the river here. But for that, that it's not a town, it's very busy. The fishermen, living upstream and downstream, park their pick-ups here, to drive to Fairbanks for shopping. 3 hour drive. Lot's of tourists come here, to take a look at the Yukon. And for sure all the adventurers, that want to go all the way up. It's also the last fuel-station before Pruedhoe-Bay, so everyone is filling up here, because it's a long stretch up there.
Das Essen war teuer, aber gut. Und die Dusche war mir 15 US-Dollar wohl die teuerste, die ich jemals genossen habe. Dafuer habe ich mich dann auch gleich wieder rasiert. Ich habe dort wieder einen ganzen Tag eine Auszeit genommen. Und die Frau vom Chef der Raststaette war so nett und hat mich ihren Computer nutzen lassen. Ueberhaupt war das ganze Team dort richtig klasse. // The food was expensive but good. And the shower with 15 US-$ maybe the most expensive, that I've ever enjoyed. But I also took the opportunity and shaved. And I rested for a whole day there. The wife of the boss of the place was nice and let me use her computer. In total the team was great.
Eine nette Geschichte habe ich noch. 2 Tage, bevor ich nach Yukon-Crossing gekommen bin, war ich spaet nachmittags gerade dabei, mein Zelt abzubauen, als auf einmal ein junger Mann mit Hut und Kayakpaddel vor mir stand. Ich habe ihn weder kommen sehen, noch hoeren. Paul aus Deutschland, der mit seinem Fahrrad unterwegs ist von Fairbanks bis.....ja, solange ihn das Fahrrad traegt nach Sueden. Und von Fairbanks in Whitehorse angekommen hat er sich gedacht, dass es doch eine gute Sache waere, mit dem Kayak erstmal rauf bis nach Emmonak zu paddeln. Er war zu der Zeit mit einem Schweden zusammen am paddeln, der den Yukon mit einem Stand-Up-Board macht. Verrueckt aber wahr, ich habe Marcus ebenfalls getroffen, hier ist sein Board. // One good story for you. 2 days before I came to Yukon-Crossing, I was pitching down my tent in late afternoon, when a young guy stood in front of me with a hat and a Kayak-Paddle. I haven't seen or hear him coming. Paul from Germany, who is riding a bicycle from Fairbanks to....yeah, how far the bike will get him down south. And when he arrived in Whitehorse he thought, that it would be a great idea, to paddle the up to Emmonak in a Kayak. He was at that point paddling with a swedish guy, who made the Yukon on a stand-up-board. Crazy but true, because I met Marcus also, here is his board.
Jedenfalls habe ich Paul dann in Yukon Crossing wieder getroffen und wir sind dann fuer zwei Naechte zusammen gepaddelt. Er war mit seinem Kayak natuerlich wesentlich schneller, hat ihm aber fuer diese Zeit mal nichts ausgemacht. Ausserdem konnte er so noch gemuetlicher beim paddeln lesen. Diese Kayaker sind echt richtig faul ;-) Die koennen halt leicht mit den Fuessen steuern und liegen schnittig im Wasser. Mein Kanu kam mir dagegen vor wie ein Oeltanker. Aber...ich konnte richtig oft meine Sitzposition aendern und es mir gemuetlich machen. Geht im Kayak nicht so gut. Und...ich konnte viel mehr Verpflegung und Ausruestung mitnehmen. Im Kayak ist der Platz doch sehr begrenzt. Nochmal vielen Dank dafuer, dass du mir die Aepfel aus Fairbanks mitgebracht hast, Paul !!! Er ist per Anhalter nach Fairbanks, um Nachschub zu kaufen. So....weiter geht es im dritten Teil ! // Anyhow, I met Paul again in Yukon Crossing and we paddled then for 2 nights together. He was way faster with his Kayak, but for this little time it was good for him. And he could read a bit more, while paddling. Those kayak-guys are really lazy ;-) They can steer with their feet and lay smart in the water. My canoe in opposite looked like an oil-tanker. But....I could change my position way more and made it myself comfortable. Not so good in a Kayak. And...I could take way more food and gear. In a Kayak it's limited. Thank you one more time, Paul, that you brought me the apples from Fairbanks. He hitched to Fairbanks to resupply. So.....I continue in part 3 !
